History of Aruna Hotels Ltd.

The Comp. was promoted by Dr P Maruthai Pillai, a first generation industrialist. Dr Pillai, after studying upto Sr. Cambridge in Srilanka, came to India & set up his own business.

The Comp. was incorporated on 9.9.1960 under the name & style of Aruna Sugars Limited as a Public Limited Comp. & obtained the certificate of Commencement of Business on 24.12.1960. In 1986 the name of Comp. was changed as Aruna Sugars and Enterprises Limited to reflect the diversified nature of Business. The Comp. first set up a sugar plant with a crushing capacity of 1,250 tcd at Pennadam, South Arcot District, Tamil Nadu. Over the years, through a series of modernisation & expansion programmes, the capacity has been expanded to its present level of 5000 tcd.

In 1986, the Comp. diversified its activities by taking over through auction by T i i C Ltd the assets, then owned by SAS Chemicals [Madrass] Pvt Ltd, a sick unit at Ranipet, North Arcot District, Tamil Nadu, which has facilities for manufacture of 30 tpd ferric alum. The alum plant has been revamped & is now working satisfactorily.

In 1987 the Comp. further diversified its activities by taking over the assets of Geetha Flour Mills Ltd at Tiruvalla, Kerala, with a milling capacity of 100 tpd of wheat. This is now a division of Company.

During the same period, the Comp. also entered the field of exports. At present, these activities comprise merchant exports of ready-made knitted & woven garments, silk & silk fabrics, shoe-uppers, etc.

The Comp. has put up a Business class Hotel & is also putting up a Distillery Project which is expected to be commissioned by October 1993 as part of further diversification plans.

The Sugar Division would contribute about 75% of the Company sales & other divisions contribute about 25%.

2000 - Aruna Sugars and Enterprises limited has changed its name to Aruna Sunrise Hotels Ltd.

2002- Aruna Sunrise Hotels Board approves proposal to hive off alum unit.
