The Cotton & Woolen Garment Industry occupies a prominent place in the Indian economy, Characterised as it is by its massive potential for employment, growth & exports. The growth of this industry is sustained as a large area is under cultivation of cotton & a good quality wool too is available albeit not of fine variety. With a low gestation period & large markets, the cotton/woollen and leather garments industry that has over the year burgeoned as a real cash cow for Indian manufacturers, merchants and traders.
In 1992, India exports in textiles were a mere $6 billion, with garments contributing a little over 50%. From 1991-92, the exports grew by about $1 billion, a growth rate of 20%. This rate of about 20% per year means an export figure of around $26 billion by 2000 which yields an Indian market share of 5.2% double the share of 2.4% in 1992.'
