Mkts end negative; Sensex down by 106 pts

Mumbai, Aug 14: It was a rangebound session for the market. The benchmark indices closed weak. The Nifty traded in a narrow range of 4550- 4600 throughout the day and ended below the 4600 mark. Selling was seen in realty, FMCG, IT, auto, pharma, bank and power stocks.

However, buying was seen in oil & gas stocks like ONGC, Reliance, GAIL and Cairn India.

The Sensex ended down 106.86 points or 0.69 pc at 15411.63. It touched an intra day high of 15,535.47 and an intra day low of 15,367.61.

The Nifty closed down 24.95 points or 0.54 pc at 4580.05. It touched an intra day high of 4619 and an intra day low of 4559.35.

The market breadth was postive, about 1501 shares advanced, 1314 shares declined, and 363 shares were unchanged.

Top gainers on the bourses were ONGC at Rs 1,220.20 up 4.79 pc, Cairn India at Rs 249.60 up 3.46 pc, GAIL at Rs 342.90 up 3.42 pc, BPCL at Rs 522.45 up 2.02, Tata Comm at Rs 502.35 up 1.93 pc, Reliance Infra at Rs 1,185.50 1.49 pc, Reliance at Rs 2,034.30 up 0.54 pc, Sterlite Ind at Rs 662.35 up 0.34 pc and HDFC Bank at Rs 1,426.85 up 0.13 pc.

Total turnover declined to Rs 85916.55 crore as against Rs 89,493.96 crore on Thursday, Aug 13. This included Rs 16397.44 crore from the NSE cash segment, Rs 63891.72 crore from the NSE F&O and the balance Rs 5627.39 crore from the BSE cash segment.

Mkts choppy; Sensex down by 23 pts


At 01.40 pm, the Nifty recovered over 50 points from day's low and was trading flat at around the 4600 mark. ONGC, Reliance, GAIL, Cairn India were positive contributors to the Nifty. Pullback was led by oil & gas, metals and cement stocks. However, selling pressure continued in FMCG, IT, pharma and banks stocks.

The Sensex was down 23.07 points or 0.15 pc at 15495.42, and the Nifty was down 1.75 points or 0.04 pc at 4603.25. About 1577 shares advanced, 1208 shares declined, and 393 shares were unchanged.

Most active shares on NSE were Reliance at Rs 2,060.55 with volumes of 2,256,319, ONGC at Rs 1,225.05 with volumes of 3,463,523 and DLF at Rs 401.95 with volumes of 9,602,691.

Top losers on the Sensex were ITC at Rs 232.95 down 2.51%, Jaiprakash Asso at Rs 219.45 down 2.16 pc, HUL at Rs 257.85 down 2.07 pc, HDFC at Rs 2,314.90 down 2.01 pc and Hero Honda at Rs 1,480 down 1.81 pc.

Index heavyweight Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 257.85 down 2.07 pc from its previous close of Rs 263.30. Tech major Infosys was trading at Rs 2,041.00 down 1.17 pc from its previous close of Rs 2,065.20.

Nifty trading flat; IT FMCG dip


At 12.09 pm, the Nifty was trading flat since morning and showed no signs of direction either way. Some buying interest was seen in oil & gas, metals, auto and power stocks. However, IT, FMCG, banking stocks were trading weak. The boarder indices were witnessing good buying interest.

The Sensex was down 29.62 points or 0.19 pc at 15488.87, and the Nifty was down 12.15 points or 0.26 pc at 4592.85. About 1661 shares advanced, 1096 shares declined, and 421 shares were unchanged.

Top gainers on the bourses were ONGC at Rs 1,223.70 up 5.09 pc, GAIL at Rs 346 up 4.36 pc, BPCL at Rs 527.60 up 3.03 pc Hindalco at Rs 111.80 up 2.95 pc, Reliance Infra at Rs 1,198.95 up 2.64 pc, Tata Steel at Rs 482 up 2.44 pc, Sterlite Ind at Rs 674.60 up 2.20 pc, and Tata Comm at Rs 506 up 2.67 pc.

Top gainers on the BSE Midcap were IndraprasthaGas, Anant Raj Ind, Everest Kanto, Spice Comm and Apollo Tyres were up 5-7 pc. Top gainers on the BSE Smallcap -NIIT Tech, Oil Country, Allied Digital, JSW Holdings and Oscar Inv were up 11-15 pc.

However, top losers on the Nifty were HCL Tech at Rs 272.10 down 3.77 pc, HDFC Rs 2,318. down 1.91 pc, ITC at Rs 235.50 down 1.61 pc, Wipro at Rs 508.85 down 1.51 pc and HUL at Rs 259.50 down 1.48 pc. Tech major Infosys was trading at Rs 2,039.00 down 1.27 pc from its previous close of Rs 2,065.20.

Mkts open choppy; IT, auto dip


The Nifty opened on a flat note and was hovering around yesterday's Aug 13 closing level (4605). Selling pressure was seen in IT, auto and banking stocks.


Tata Steel, SAIL, HUL, HDFC Bank, ONGC were the major gainers on the bourses. However, Infosys, ICICI Bank, Maruti, Tata Motors were the major losers on the Sensex.

The Sensex was down 50 points, to 15459 and the Nifty fell 14 points, to 4590. Asian markets were trading mixed. Nikkei, Seoul Composite, Straits Times and Taiwan Weighted were trading higher. However, Shanghai Composite was down 2.5 pc and Hang Seng was trading lower.

The US markets pulled off modest gains in a late rally as investors cheered an encouraging business-inventories report, the latest sign that the recession may be winding down.


The Dow Jones industrial average gained 36.58 points, or 0.4 pc, to 9,398.19. The S&P 500 index added 6.92 points, or 0.7pc , to 1,012.73, while the Nasdaq Composite Index rose 10.63 points, or 0.5 pc, to 2,009.35.
