Mkts end in green; Sensex up by 334 pts

Mumbai, Aug 24: In the early trade, the Nifty had hit the 4600 mark and held this level throughout the session on the back of strong Asian cues. Among the Asian markets, Japan's Nikkei surged 3.35 pc; Hang Seng, Jakarta, Straits Times, Kospi and Taiwan Weighted went up 1.7-2.8 pc, and Shanghai rose 1.1 pc.

The 30-share BSE Sensex closed 387.92 points or 2.55 pc higher at 15,628.75 and the 50-share NSE Nifty surged 2.52 pc or 114 points, to settle at 4642.80. As per the provisional data, the Nifty August future closed with 6.8 points discount and the September future with 0.8 points discount; but they were in premium throughout the session.

The markets reported total turnover of Rs 96,614.47 crore as against Rs 99,976.38 crore on Friday. This included Rs 14,993.66 crore from the NSE cash segment, Rs 76,803.24 crore from the NSE F&O and the balance Rs 4,817.57 crore from the BSE cash segment.

The market breadth was positive; about 2093 shares advanced while 761 shares declined on the BSE. Nearly 327 shares remained unchanged.

The Nifty rose 114 points, to 4,642 and the Sensex went up 334 points, to 15,575 (provisional data).

Mkts continue +ve; Nifty up by 110 pts


At 12:55 pm, the Nifty was trading with about 100 points gains and the Sensex with about 300-350 points. After the surge in Asian markets, European markets also moved up 0.8 pc each that was also supportive to the markets.

All the sectoral indices were in the green. Major buying was seen in realty, metal, FMCG, capital goods, technology, auto and banking stocks; their respective indices went up 2-4.4 pc.

The Sensex rose 381 points, to 15,622 and the Nifty up 110 points to 4,640. The broader indices were also following the same trend, up 2.5 pc each.

Total traded turnover stood at Rs 56,000 crore, so far. This included around Rs 46,000 crore from the NSE F&O segment.

Positive contributors on the Sensex - Reliance Industries, Infosys, ICICI Bank, L&T and HDFC went up 2-3.6 pc.

Top gainers - Hindalco, Jaiprakash Associates, ITC, Tata Motors, Sterlite Industries, Cairn India, Unitech and Siemens were up 4-6 pc.

Top percentage gainers - Oscar Investment, Selan Exploration and SE Investments gained 20 pc each. Grauer and Weil, Powersoft Global, Alphageo, Carol Info, Plethico Pharma and Agro Tech Foods were up 12-18.5 pc.

Top percentage losers - Videocon Communication, TTK Prestige, Acrysil India, Richa Ind, JMD Telefilms, Uniphos Enterprises, Heritage Foods, Dharani Sugars and Arihant Foundation fell 5-8 pc.

Sensex trading higher; metal, auto, IT up


At 10:55 am, the Nifty extended gains and was trading above the 4600 mark on the back of buying across all the sectors. Among the sectors, the BSE Realty, Metal, Capital Goods, Auto, IT and Bank indices went up 2-3.7 pc.

Asian markets were helping the markets; they were up 1.5-3 pc and Shanghai was up just 0.9 pc. The broader indices were also moving up in line with the benchmark indices, rose around 2 pc each.

The Sensex surged 285 points, to 15,526 and the Nifty rose 84 points, to 4,613. The Nifty September future was trading with 12 points premium. About 1,023 shares advanced while 167 shares declined on the NSE.

Top gainers - Jaiprakash Associates, Sterlite Industries, Hindalco, DLF, ACC, HCL Tech, Unitech, Cairn India, Jindal Steel and Siemens were up 2.5-4.5 pc.

Positive contributors - Reliance Industries, ONGC, L&T, ICICI Bank, Cairn India, Infosys and HDFC gained 1.5-3.7 pc. However, BPCL was down 2.8 pc and NTPC marginally in the red.

In the midcap space, Wockhardt, Phoenix Mills, Motilal Oswal, United Breweries and Monnet Ispat surged 5-8.7 pc.

In the smallcap space, Oscar Investment, Carol Info, English India Clays, Manappuram and Lakshmi Energy were up 9.7-15.7 pc. However, Goodricke Group, Shrenuj and Company, JMD Telefilms, Bharati Shipyard and Religare Techno rose 3.5-6 pc.

Mkts open positive; Sensex up by 275 pts


The Sensex started the first day of the week on a stronger note and was trading around the 15,500 levels on the back of positive Asian cues. The Nifty also touched the 4600 mark in the opening trade. Buying was seen in metal, banking, real estate, auto and FMCG stocks.

At 10:01 am, the Sensex rose 275 points, to 15,516 and the Nifty went up 78 points, to 4,607. The CNX Midcap also gained 71 points at 5,909 and the BSE Smallcap was up 94 points at 6,557. About 895 shares advanced while 95 shares declined on the NSE.

Among the frontliners, Unitech, DLF, Hindalco, Sterlite Industries, Tata Steel, Suzlon Energy, ICICI Bank, Reliance Capital, Cairn, HDFC Bank, Hero Honda (trades above Rs 1,500 a share), Maruti, PNB and HUL were the gainers. However, only BPCL was in the red among largecaps.

In Midcap space, Wockhardt was up 7 and Fortis Healthcare was up 5pc , as Fortis is going to buy some Wockhardt's hospitals for Rs 900-1000 crore. Carol Info Services has 9 pc stake in Wockhardt Hospitals, rose 13.5 pc.

Adani Power was flat at Rs 103 a share. Aptech, NIIT, KPIT Cummins, Indiabulls Real (Indiabulls Power, a subsidiary of the company, started road shows for pre-IPO placement), HDIL, Mahindra Life Space and Puravankara Projects were up 1-4 pc.
